American Serena Williams weeps into her towel after her 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Aravane Rezai of France.

The four-time Wimbledon champion remains undefeated in Slam first rounds. An achievement no other active champion can claim. 44-0. Truly remarkable.

Her tears today elicited my own. People seem to have already forgotten that she almost died. Surely she hasn't. That she's able to play tennis again at all is a miracle.

The crowd cheered for the upset. After the moment captured above, it stood as she, wiping her yes, left the court, applauding almost as though she'd already won the title again.

If you still believe this great champion doesn't care about tennis, then you simply cannot see.

Like her or not, Serena's story is unparalleled.

The sport is all the better for it.
