From pompelmo...

Our local guy reached the second round! This is the first ever open era grand slam tournament singles main board showing up and win for any Turkish tennis player :))

Of course Marsel Ilhan will not even know what hit him when he faces John Isner.

Probably not. But what a story.

Cliff Drysdale, after James Blake made a stunning get and hit a winner on the dead run, said, "Look at the boy!"

Oh, Cliffy. Not the kind of slip of the tongue you want to make from the broadcast booth. Or anywhere else, really.

Third-seed US tennis player Venus Williams celebrates during her match against Russia's Vera Dushevina during the first round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, August 31, 2009. Williams won 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.

Venus Williams wore a Medusa crown on the back of her fuchsia dress. That's all I can call it. Someone else will have to tell me what it is.

Samantha Stosur and Sugiyama Ai gave us the women's match of the day. A fefw of the men's matches went the distance, but none off them were broadcast, as far as I was aware.

All in all, the tennis on Day 1 was pedestrian. I missed the opening ceremonies.
