Needless to say, I'm thrilled. After Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Andreev gave Bob and Mike Bryan all they could handle through a set and half, the No. 1 doubles team in the world for three years running proved why they are the dominant force in men's doubles.
Their ability to play the net with the precision of sculptors was in full force as they wore out their overmatched opponents and clenched the tie for the US.
The drought is over.
Andy, James, Mike, Bob and Patrick have brought the Cup back to the USA for the first time in 12 years and doing it on home soil with such illustrious DC alumni as Stan Smith and Barry MacKay in attendance, not to mention the living legend that is Billie Jean King, was extra special. The fireworks and the red, white, and blue streamers that rained down on the court after matchpoint was something to see. It felt like the Fourth of July.
Who cares about the icy roads outside.
The Russian team played soccer after the match on the tennis court while the US team took pictures and signed autographs.
Tomorrow, after the dead rubbers are completed, they team will receive the silver Cup in the trophy ceremony.
I'll be there with NetHead on.
We Are The Champions!
