Good. Ass. Match.

The Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych celebrates after defeating Switzerland's Roger Federer at the Sony Ericsson Open tennis tournament in Key Biscayne, Florida, March 30, 2010.
Reuters

For Tomas Berdych, it had been a long time between drinks. Going on six years, in fact. But last night, he got to sip another sweet victory over world No. 1 Roger Federer.

I only just saw the end of the match on Tennis Channel encore a little while ago. I watched the first set before going to bed last night and even though Raja double faulted to gift Berdych the set, I figured the Czech would find a way to collapse and lose anyway. Got so busy today, I didn't even bother to check the results. When I turned on the tele, there was Berdych up an early break in the final set.

Ah. So what. He'll still lose.

The commentators filled me in on what I missed in the second set. One of them used the word collapse. Figures. And so when Berdych dumped serve at 4-3 to gift the break right back, I almost turned off the television and went back to the greenhouse.

Thankfully, the phone rang. I was on the line just long enough to see Raja come within 2 points of victory at 5-4, only to execute his own bit of the C word.

From there on, it was enthralling stuff. Dramatic. Crowd lapped it up like panting dogs. They wanted Raja to prevail. When he arrived, finally, at match point, it was on its feet. Surely Raja would serve his trademark flat ace out wide, short in the box, a magnificent delivery.

Nope. His timid first serve finds the net.

But still. Surely Berdych -- who had the match on his racquet at 5-4 in the ultimate breaker, but lost the first point when Raja crafted a point ending in a backhand drop shot that Berdych fell chasing down leaving the court open for Raja's dink forehand, lost the second when his own forehand missed the sideline by millimeters, and now found himself staring down the barrel of match point on Raja's serve -- would falter.

Nope. He saved match point like a champion. Deep return. Forehand winner, crosscourt, so flat and hard and deep, Raja didn't even try.

Two points later, when Raja's final forehand sailed beyond the baseline, Berdych rejoiced. Looked like the guy I saw almost six years ago who I thought would go on to bigger and better things but his head got in the way. Last night, though, he dug out from under. Finally.

The crowd was a bit let down, their guy didn't pull through, after all, but it had thoroughly enjoyed a good-ass match, best one of the tournament.

I know that Svetlana Kuznetsova losing to anyone at anytime isn't really a big upset anymore. But Marion Bartoli tore through her so thoroughly, this one counts. Injured or not.

Venus struggled, Jankovic got ousted, Clijsters cruised, Henin, too. But look what the third Belgian did to that poor Swiss woman?

Quote For The Day

“Thankfully [Serena and I] won't be walking into the sunset too soon. Hopefully that will give some bumper time. It's just definitely strange because of the unbelievable tradition we've had with tennis for Americans since the beginning. I think that's what makes it so odd.

"But I've got hope. There are a lot of players who are very good, but getting to that level isn't easy for anyone. So hopefully there will be someone coming along soon with the tools and the traits and who will build that in their game to get there."--Venus Williams on the state of women's tennis at home

About the only tennis I saw yesterday was a set and a half of Rafa against Nalby and a bit of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against Philip Kohlschreiber. Nalby still has it all, but needs to get his cardio back in order. Rafa simply refused to lose and wore Nalby into the cement by the middle of the third set. Tsonga still has brain farts and for all his talent, Kohlschreiber is basically a weakling.

It was good to see some tennis finally. I almost forgot what it looked like.

The weather is too nice. I simply can't get in from outside. I haven't a clue what's going on down in Key Biscayne, so I'll need our readers to keep our readers posted.

I should get back to tennis this weekend, but it depends on the weather.

Once again, without having peeped the draws, I'll go ahead and say that Novak Djokovic and Venus Williams will win.

INDIAN WELLS, CA - MARCH 21: Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia celebrates his win over Andy Roddick during the final of the BNP Paribas Open on March 21, 2010 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California.

The old guy beat back the youngins -- and Andy Roddick -- to take the first big title of his career. I had a feeling it was going to turn out this way. I blame oddman for writing out the jinx. Roddick, his gifted victory in Brisbane earlier this year notwithstanding, has forgotten how to win. The tortured American is now one for three in finals this year. Not the kind of percentage the third winningest active player on tour can boast. Maybe he can take inspiration from the old guy. Ivan Ljubicic hadn't won anything in so long, not only had he forgotten how to win, but there was virtually no weight on his shoulders as he approached this victory.

Jelena Jankovic is back. Consider that snark. Caroline Wozniacki became the No. 2 player in the world today. Consider that a joke.

I'm not sure Indian Wells has ever been such a bust.

Next up, Miami. With no Serena Williams.

Thank goodness I've got the farm to keep me busy.

As predicted, 2010 is proving to be quite an unpredictable season. Indian Wells features four new finalists: Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic, Andy Roddick, who has faltered in desert semifinals more times than I can count, and biggest surprise of them all, Ljubicic, celebrating his 31st birthday with arguably the biggest win of his career.

Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus celebrates his victory over Roger Federer of Switzerland at the Indian Wells ATP tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California March 16, 2010.

::

Our own Karen predicted that the top 4 players on the ATP wouldn't advance to the semifinals and the first one to fall is none other than the world's top player.

I went to bed after the first set, trying to get back on my farming schedule, so I only found out a few hours ago that Marcos rallied from a set down to upset the name that had befuddled him on the tennis court through six matches.

Raja had two match points in the second set? Was up a break in the third? Had a third match point? And still lost?

What's that saying about frozen infernos?

While I thought Marcos would beat Raja in Melbourne, which never came to pass because the Cypriot lost early, I didn't give this matchup at this event a second thought.

Color me surprised. Very.

Standing O for Baghdatis.

Djoke is becoming a real fighter, his brain farts notwithstanding. When someone stares down the barrel of match point and survives, it deserves applause. And Philip Kohlschreiber didn't exactly choke. He got tentative, and then pressed on a few shots he didn't really have to hit, but he had been doing that all match, so....

The defending champion Rafael Nadal looks like he's trying make a statement, and I'm not just talking about those horrid shorts, John Isner seems to be grasping the torch, Juan Carlos Ferrero's age is showing, and Tomas Berdych beat the crap out of Fernando Verdasco. It wasn't as close as the lopsided score would suggest.

Tennis player Serena Williams arrives at the 18th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Award Viewing Party in West Hollywood, California March 7, 2010.

Serena won her 3rd career Laureus World Sports Award in Dubai on Wednesday after she was named Laureus Sportswoman of the Year for 2009, 7 years after she won her first. In 2007, she won the Laureus Comeback Award, bringing her total to three, the most won by a female. Only Roger Federer, who has four, has won more. Federer was up for Sportsman of the Year for 2009 but lost to Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, who won his second Laureus Award. Kim Clijsters won the Laureus Comeback Award.

Serena said:

"I am just so delighted to win this Award, but very disappointed I cannot be in Abu Dhabi to say thank you in person. It's my third Laureus Award which is amazing and I would like to say thank you to all the Academy Members who voted for me and to the world's media who nominated me. Last year had its ups and downs, so to get this support is fantastic.

"As a tennis player you look at the amazing names of the Academy Members - like John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Boris Becker and Monica Seles - who have won so many Grand Slams and they know what it takes to do that. There is nothing better in sport than being acknowledged by the people that you looked up to when you were a young player.

"The Laureus Awards have been a constant reflection of my career, winning in 2003 and 2007, and I think I was also nominated four more times. I know only Roger Federer has more Awards, so it would be cool to catch him up.

"I've had a few injury problems over the years, so it's been great to get back to the top and be World No 1 again. It's going to be an interesting year with Justine Henin back, but I'm playing well and it was great to win in Australia, and I still want to win every tournament I play. It's going to be a very exciting 2010."

Congratulations, Serena!

I have been planting, planting, planting, my birth mother is visiting till Sunday, my best friend till Wednesday of next week, I've still got to do taxes, and then there's this other thing occupying my time that I need to focus on. More on that on my other blog sometime soon.

I'm going to let this blog take care of itself (mostly) until tennis comes on television this weekend.

I haven't even looked at the draws but I'll make these predictions anyway:

Roger Federer and Justine Henin will win.

See you when I see you.

Davis Cup Heroics

John Isner of the U.S. hits a return to Serbia's Novak Djokovic during their Davis Cup World Group, 1st round tennis match in Belgrade March 7, 2010.
Reuters

John Isner took Novak Djokovic, arguably the third best clay court player in the world last year, to five sets on clay in Serbia.

I'm going to say that again:

John Isner took Novak Djokovic, arguably the third best clay court player in the world last year, to five sets on clay in Serbia.

Make of the American's game whatever you will, but that was some effort.

Apparently, Venus Williams was tweeting about her nerves. If one believes Justin Gimelstob, President Obama was watching the match.

Whatever the case, Isner spilled his blood and guts all over the place. Made a temperamental Djoke earn it.

All this after pinch hitting for Mike Bryan in doubles the day before and getting the win to give himself a chance to do it again in singles.

Who knows what would have happened had Isner been fresh for the crucial singles rubber, but what did happen was fantabulous. One of our guests who doesn't even watch tennis couldn't avert her eyes in the match's final game.

I think this new American team has a foundation upon which to build a competitive team.

David Nalbandian plays Davis Cup ties like no other. Just when you thought it was safe to write him off once again....

Injured a few weeks back, he kept Argentina in the tie against Sweden in Sweden by winning the doubles rubber with Horacio Zeballos and then clinches the tie with a four-set win in the live fifth.

Most Valuable Player.

Sampras Lists Multimillion-Dollar Home

LOS ANGELES -- Tennis great Pete Sampras and his wife, actress Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, have listed their newly built compound in Lake Sherwood for $25 million.

The gated contemporary north of Los Angeles sits on 20 hilltop acres with 360-degree views, a north-south tennis court and a swimming pool. The more than 13,000-square-foot main house has a combined theater and game room. Including the 1,200-square-foot guesthouse and the 2,000-square-foot detached gym, the property has seven bedrooms and 11 1/2 bathrooms.

(...)

The couple offered no reason for selling, but Sampras does have an impressive real estate record, having sold a Beverly Hills mansion in 2008 for $23 million as well as other homes in Los Angeles' Benedict Canyon and Beverly Hills since 2003, according to Los Angeles Times reports.

Nice work if you can get it.

Faces Of The Day

Agustin Calleri, center, who announced his retirement from tennis after elimination from the first round of Wimbledon last June, is honored in a career celebration at the Copa Telmex in Argentina yesterday. The other tennis players in attendance are, from left to right, Juan
Mónaco, José Acasuso, Mariano Zabaleta, and Juan Ignacio Chela. I'm not sure who the first two men are, but I would imagine the man on the far left is tournament director and former Top-10 player Martin Jaite.

Quote For The Day

"So the Tennis Hall of Fame, with its selections today, is trying to reorient our thinking on the matter. The days of the top singles players also regularly playing doubles are over, probably forever. But that doesn't mean doubles is without merit. It's not a coincidence or from lack of effort that the best singles players, when they do play doubles, almost never walk away with the trophy (Williams sisters excepted). You don't need the athleticism that the singles game requires, but your technical and strategic skills must be well-honed."--Douglas Perry

Gulbis Wins First Title

Ernests Gulbis, of Latvia, holds up the trophy after defeating Ivo Karlovic, of Croatia, 6-2, 6-3 in the final at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships in Delray Beach, Fla. , Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010.
AP

Ivo Karlovic observed his 31st birthday yesterday, but he didn't have much to celebrate. Ernests Gulbis, all potential and inconsistency, brought out his best tennis and slayed the giant 6-2, 6-3 to win his first ATP title on his first try at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.

It wasn't as close as the score.

All week, Gulbis' talent was on full display. In the final, he frustrated the Croat with return winners off first serves, unreturnable bombs of his own, cannonball passing shots, and drop shots out of nowhere. Dr. Ivo faced such of barrage, he was found slicing his backhand into the court right in front of his feet more times than he cared to count.

Ever since he tore Tommy Robredo a new one at the 2007 US Open in a performance that earned him a Gonad and a whole lot of expectant fans, the inconsistent and temperamental Latvian has been on a mission of mediocrity. He had trouble winning two matches in a row for much of last year, but he comes out this week and takes his first title without dropping a set. The first man from Latvia to win an ATP title.

“Everything what I do now is first time for my country,” he said after the match. “Of course it’s great. I hope it’s positive. I hope much more players will start to practise in Latvia. It’s good for tennis in Latvia. They see that a guy from Latvia also can make it and win an ATP World Tour event.”

Maybe it's the new Afro, but Gulbis looks as though he may be ready for his close up.

Let's see what he brings to Indian Wells.
