Novak Djokovic - Guest on Jay Leno Show

Tennis Star and number one ATP world ranked tour player Novak Djokovic, will be guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno , together with actress Katie Holmes, and singer Mat Kearney, on Tuesday, August 2. This will be the first appearance of 24 year old Djokovic on Leno' show.

Novak Djokovic is a professional tennis player from Serbia who is ranked No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) as of July 4, 2011. He is the first player representing Serbia to win a Grand Slam singles title and the youngest player in the open era to have reached the semi-finals of all four Grand Slam events. He has won three Grand Slam singles titles, the 2008 and 2011 Australian Open championships and the 2011 Wimbledon Championships.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno is a late-night talk show hosted by comedian Jay Leno that is being produced at the NBC studios in Burbank. The show's long time established format is divided into six segments. The first segment is Jay's 10 minute monologue, right after the announcer Wally Wingert announces the opening credits for the show. The second segment is a comedy sketch, a mini-documentary by a " Tonight Show correspondent" or a trademark of Leno's, like "Headlines," or "Jaywalking" (Jay's streetside pop quizzes).

The first guest appears in the third segment. The interview is divided into two segments, and then followed by the fifth segment, which is the interview of the second guest. The sixth segment is usually a musical performance, or a stand-up comedy performance.

Novak Djokovic To be Honoured In Montreal

Rogers Cup presented by National Bank Tournament Director Eugène Lapierre is pleased to announce that the ATP will organize a special ceremony to honour the new World No. 1 Novak Djokovic on Monday, Aug. 8 at 5:30 p.m.

We are thrilled that Novak will celebrate his world No. 1 ranking here in Montreal, said Eugène Lapierre. It is just the right fit as it was also here that he first showed his great talent to the entire world in 2007 when he took out the top three players in the world at the time, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to win the Rogers Cup. His astonishing results this year, with only a loss going into August, positions him among our sport's great champions.

Djokovic, who has won 48 of his 49 matches in 2011, took over the No. 1 position on the South African Airways ATP Rankings on July 4, replacing Rafael Nadal, who had held the top spot since June 7, 2010.Nadal had beenNo. 1 for the previous 56 weeks and 102 weeks overall. Djokovic, who was ranked No. 2 behind Nadal since March 21, is the first Serbian male to rank No. 1 in the history of South African Airways ATP Rankings (since Aug. 23, 1973). The last player to rank No. 1 before Nadal and Roger Federer was American Andy Roddick, the week of January 26, 2004.

The ceremony will precede the evening session which promises to be rich in emotion, as organizers are also planning the induction of the legendary Jimmy Connors into the Rogers Cup Hall of Fame before second match, scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Novak Djokovic - The Era That He Slew

From 2003-2010, Roger Federer and then Rafael Nadal dominated men's tennis. Novak Djokovic's dream season has put an end to those days.Photo: Associated Press

WASHINGTON, July 27, 2011—When Roger Federer began tearing up the tennis world, only one question was on everyone's mind: how long would it be before he dominated so completely as to win the Grand Slam? When Rafael Nadal started reeling off his string of French Open titles, the collective human mind switched to pondering how long it would be until any player could beat Nadal on clay, opening the door for Federer to reach his goal. When Nadal started to defeat Federer on hard court and grass as well, speculation took off as to how long it would take for Nadal to completely overcome Federer and win the Grand Slam himself.

But it is a cruel irony, as we look back at those years, the talk of 2003-2010, and see that neither Federer nor Nadal has joined Don Budge and Rod Laver in the exclusive group of men who have won the Grand Slam. Crueler still is the fact that the best shot at seeing a Grand Slam in the next five years, hinges not on Nadal nor Federer.

No, the best hope for a Grand Slam is centered squarely on the shoulders of Novak Djokovic. As has been well documented, Djokovic is in the midst of a near-perfect season. He won his second Australian Open title in January, starting a 41-match winning streak that lasted deep into the French Open, ending only after a defeat at the hands of Federer in an epic semifinal. Djokovic then proceeded to claim his first Wimbledon crown and the title of World No. 1, rolling over Nadal in the final after avoiding a rematch with Federer.

Roger Federer: Too old at 30?

Roger Federer: Too old at 30?

Now, Federer is written off as old at nearly 30. Nadal isn't dismissed to the same extent, but is criticized for not seeming to play with the same energy and intensity as he did pre-injuries. Neither premise is particularly valid. Why would Federer, acknowledged as the greatest player of all-time, burn out so suddenly? And Nadal, even when considering his incredibly injury-conducive style of play, done for at 25?

That Djokovic has performed so well as to inspire these attitudes about the two greatest tennis players of his time is nothing short of a miracle. To step in with a performance dominant enough to produce a bounty of doubt about a man with 16 major titles to his name, and another previously on pace for even more, is simply unheard of.

In 2007, when Djokovic came to prominence after taking out the top three players in the world— Andy Roddick, Nadal, and Federer—in a row at a US Open Series event in Toronto, he was merely described as a rising player who would be stuck in the shadows of Federer and Nadal.  Even when he backed up his performance that summer by making it all the way to the 2007 US Open final, he was still dismissed. But he merely became better and better. It seems simple, but the simplicity is what has made Djokovic's accomplishments stand out to the extent that they have. He quietly hijacked a decade that was supposed to be dominated by two others. The 2011 US Open will seal his case should he win it for his third major of the year. For better or for worse, Novak Djokovic represents the future of tennis, even if his rise still seems too meteoric to be true.

Novak Djokovic v Rafael Nadal in Mexico

I have found a little more information. I have copied the original translation (for those who speak Spanish) & the Google translation.

The current two best tennis players in the world, Novak Djokovic Rafael Nadal and Spanish, will delight the capital's white sports fans offer an exhibition in October or November next on stage to define between the City's Zocalo Mexico and the plaza of the Monument to the Revolution. Novak Djokovic is two years less experience in the ATP Rafael Nadal, but that does not limit you to play you one on one and star in this season one of the strongest rivalries in tennis. The Ministry of Tourism of Mexico, by Alejandro Rojas, and was confirmed by representatives of both players to play in Mexico City at an event that will serve to promote the capital to be called "The Party for Peace ". To say Rojas, Head of Government Marcelo Ebrard wants through this presentation is projected to the world a safe and peaceful image of Mexico City. Ebrard is who has the final word for the place where the court is to be mounted where they will face Nole, Wimbledon champion and world number one, and Rafa, king at Roland Garros. "There's a prior commitment, a yes from them, I even say that Nadal is very optimistic and eager to come to Mexico City. All we can say right now is that they come," said Rojas. "The two world's largest players now come to the largest city in the world, the largest square in Latin America. This would be in October or November, depending on the agenda of the players. Moreover, as is an exhibition not require much preparation and will not compete, "he added. Rojas did not disclose the amount of payment guarantees, demanding professional tennis player or the total cost of the organization, but said that the expenses borne by sponsors and the GDF is basically responsible for logistics, security and promotion. The Zocalo was laid in February 2009 to host a Home Run Derby before the World Baseball Classic in March of that year, but eventually the event was not held due to lack of permissions.

Key Takeaways:
1) The stats clearly show that Djokovic has a better overall game amongst the top 4. No doubt that he is now known as a player with no weakness.

2) Djokovic has an edge over Nadal in two key areas: Service and Return Games Won. Result: He has defeated Nadal in all the 5 meetings this year.

3) Federer on the other hand has had a good year with strong service games. But he has lacked in a very important area: Return Games Won. He is 12 % points and 9 % points behind Djokovic and Nadal respectively. A huge margin. So if he wants to win US open, he will have to win more on Second Serve Returns and Break Points.

4) Murray is one of the best returners in the game currently. But if he wants to  break the top 3, he will have to win more on his service games. He is 12 % points behind Djokovic. Especially his focus should be on his Second Serve Points which seem to be his vulnerable point.

People sometimes say that statistics cannot help predict a player’s game and performance. Right but if you are looking at one and not the entire game statistics. Overall game statistics can be very  important as it can help a player identify his strengths and weaknesses. So that he can focus on becoming the best player like Djokovic did last year. Not only this, but it also helps the coaching staff and player to decide on the opponents weaknesses and strengths and decide the strategy for the game.

And clearly Djokovic statistics tell the entire story, isn't it true?

Women's Soccer World Cup Final: Japan Defeats US To Inspire A Healing Nation!

Article first published as Women's Soccer World Cup Final: Japan Defeats US To Inspire A Healing Nation! on Technorati. (Author-Apeksha HA)

What a final it was? Inspiring, Amazing, Classy – no words can be fitting enough to describe the emotions that have engulfed the hearts of the millions of people around the world. It was a match between the favorites: USA and The Sentimental Favorites: Japan and will go down in the history of the World Cup as one of the most complete and entertaining finals of all.

If there was a nation that needed this world cup victory more than ever, it was Japan. This victory for Japan is more than a soccer match win, people will look at it as the most inspiring tale in their history and will give them hope to fight and become one of the best again. As Hope Solo said: "As much as I wanted this, if there was another team I could give it to, it'd be Japan.". For the first time, US fans won’t be disappointed by the loss of their own team.

Both teams played mesmerizing soccer to keep everyone glued to their seats. Twelve shots in the first 30 minutes and only one on the target; this stat will come back to haunt the memories of every US player for the coming years. IF ONLY they could have capitalized. But saying that, we cannot take anything away from either team as both deserved to win this World Cup Final equally.

This was the best game that US has played in this World Cup and got 1-0 up by a brilliant goal by Alex Morgan in the 69th minute. But the Japanese team who had won with Germany in extra time and came back a goal down in the Semi Final, was not to give up so easily. On a rare lapse from the US defense, Miyama equalized the score in 81st minute. It was a case of being at the right place at the right time. With 1-1, the Finals went into extra time, third time in the history.

In the extra time, US again took the lead with Abby Wambach scoring in the 104th minute(her 13th World Cup career goal) to give US the lead second time in the match, only to be equalized by Homare Sawa near the end of the extra time. But the most critical moment came in 120th minute when Azusa Iwashimizu of Japan sacrificed herself for the team to save a probable goal by fouling Lloyd near the penalty area and received a red card. She is the real hero as Japan then went on to win in the penalty shootout with US scoring only one out of 4 chances.

To summarize: My key learning(s) from today’s match:
1) Never Give Up In Life: Even if you are the underdogs, you can still come back and win. Japanese team by its grittiness and belief rewrote history today.

2) Keep your cool under pressure: Japan was able to win the match because they handled pressure better than US team did.

3) Winning is not the only way to rule the hearts of millions of fans around the world: US team by its classy play and attitude throughout the World Cup will definitely be a rage in the world!

Novak Djokovic - Shows Us His Ball Skills

Courtesy: Daily Mail

As the newly-crowned World No.1 men's tennis player, Novak Djokovic is known for his ball skills.

But the Serbian star showed he's just as nifty with a football as he played in the Mediterranean yesterday.

Following his stunning season, the 24-year-old treated his girlfriend Jelena Ristic to a
sunshine break on the French Riviera.

Looking tanned and relaxed, the devout Orthodox Christian played with his blonde partner and their dog in the sea.

He recently hinted the couple are hoping to wed after noting improvements to married tennis players.

He said: '“It might even be good for my game. I have a feeling Roger Federer was much more relaxed after he got married and became a father. Maybe I’ll find the same experience.

His break comes less than two weeks after he knocked Spaniard Rafael Nadal off the top of the world ranking when he clinched the Wimbledon title.

Earlier this month,he was treated to a royal reception when he was greeted by 100,000 Serbians in Belgrade.

'This is absolutely unbelievable and I owe all of you eternal gratitude for this reception,' an elated Djokovic said as he held aloft the trophy.

'The time has come to bare all my emotions to you and all I can say is that you are the best in the world because only Serbian fans can throw a party like this. You have made the happiest day of my life even better and I dedicate this trophy to you.

'We have a soul that is second to none and with the team event coming up, I can promise you we will do everything in our power to win it all again.'

Djokovic and his two younger brothers then joined rock, pop and folk bands on stage as fans lit flares and waved Serbian flags.

The frenzy culminated when Djokovic and his family engaged in a traditional Serbian folk dance as fireworks lit the skies above Belgrade.

A Journey, A Dream: US Women All Set To Rewrite History

Article first published as A Journey, A Dream: US Women All Set To Rewrite History on Technorati. (Author-Apeksha HA)

It was the fourth time in World Cup history that a team came back to win after falling behind in extra time, and a first at the Women’s World Cup last Sunday. But this was just the beginning. The fairy tale continued on Wednesday for the US women’s soccer team at the World Cup as US defeated France 3-1. Abby Wambach, the star forward again came to the rescue again with a late goal in 79th minute which spurred the comeback.
This is the same team which had faced a possible exit in the quarter finals against Brazil if not for the magnificent late goal in 122nd minute of the second half of extra time by Wambach. It was in 1999 that the US last won Women’s World Cup and since then haven’t been able to produce a team with that huge fan appeal. Until now.
This dynamic team has taken the entire US nation by storm and frenzy. People are gathering all over the country at sports bars, households, streets to support their team. Not too far behind are the social media sites which have been inundated with floods of messages of support for this wonderful team.
What is so special about this team is their will to fight back and never give up in any situation. This was evident in both their previous matches where they bounced back at the last stages of the game. What marks this US team is their indomitable spirit and the way they have believed in themselves to perform resulting in huge support and admiration from people all over the world.
The next hurdle and the most important one will be in the form of Japan who are on a course of defining history themselves. Plagued by the memories of the devastating earthquake, the Japanese are all the more geared up to write their own story.
But in the words of Wambach-“This is our journey, This is our dream.”

This US team is certainly not going to give up on their dream of winning the most coveted championship in soccer and more importantly mark the turning point of the growth of soccer back home.

Drive By

I'm in the weeds. Literally. Despite drought-like conditions, the weeds are growing faster than mold. The soil is dry as corn meal, but the pigweed and plantain weed and purslane and crabgrass and belladonna and every other climbing, spreading, strangling weed you can think of are thriving.

Thriving.

I haven't seen but about two games of tennis since Wimbledon and have read about it even less.

I suppose I'll get back to it sometime during the US Open Series. But I've got to save my sweet corn and watermelon, my blackeye peas and okra, and my sweet potatoes and peppers from extinction.

See you when I see you.
